Rwanda Initiative participant awarded prestigious scholarship

(OTTAWA, Dec. 5, 2008)— Arthur Asiimwe, a journalist from Rwanda who is studying in Carleton's Master of Journalism program with support from the Rwanda Initiative, has been awarded the Richard J. Van Loon Scholarship.

The $7,000 award was created by the former Carleton president to assist African students at Carleton who have demonstrated high academic performance but require financial aid to pursue their studies.

Asiimwe was the Rwanda correspondent for the Reuters news agency and intends to return to Rwanda upon completion of his studies to make a contribution to building the capacity of the media in his country. Last year's recipient of the Van Loon scholarship was also a Rwanda Initiative participant, journalist Collin Haba.
